The anthurium (Anthurium sp., Araceae) belongs to the Araceae family, which includes several species of ornamental plants, such as the philodendron, the dieffenbachia, the calla lily and others. Its origin is from Latin America and more specifically from Colombia. There are various species and varieties that are cultivated and sold. A plant that requires special care and does not grow in the conditions of our country. For this reason, it is cultivated almost exclusively as an indoor plant. The glossy green color of its leaves and its impressive flower make it one of the most beloved and popular indoor plants.

Characteristics of the plant

The plant grows smoothly in a warm environment and high atmospheric humidity. The room temperature should range between 20-25 oC, although it also grows at temperatures up to 30 oC and high humidity. It is advisable that there are no large fluctuations in temperature inside the room. The plant should be placed in bright places, but not in direct sunlight. Anthurium is usually watered once a week during the winter and twice in the summer and is also fertilized once every 2 weeks during the summer months, with water-soluble fertilizer for indoor plants. In addition, it should be placed in places where there are no cold air currents. In general, anthurium does not need pruning, only the removal of dry leaves and flower stems. Its leaves should be cleaned frequently with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Transplanting & Propagating Anthurium

Anthurium is transplanted into a larger pot usually once every two years. Its propagation is mainly done by dividing the root system during the winter months, and keeping it in a place with high humidity. In addition, propagation can be done with seeds.
