Tribute to Pansy

The pansy is one of the most popular annual spring flowering plants that stand out in pots and planters on our balconies. It is characterized by a lively, low growth of 15 - 25 centimeters, dense vegetation and early flowering with impressive flowers. You will find single-colored pansies in yellow, orange, burgundy, purple, white, blue or a combination of the above colors. Pansies that have a black spot in the center of the flower are also very special. Pansies start blooming very early in late winter and last until the end of June.

Historical data

Pansy has been known since antiquity and has been used in medicine since the 16th century, in cases of skin diseases.

Homer mentions that the Athenians used pansies to alleviate anger, while Pliny believed that they acted against headaches and dizziness.

Pansies were used in love potions in the past and for this reason its English name is heartsease, which means "heart relief".

In folk medicine, the herb was used for problems such as epilepsy, asthma, skin diseases, eczema, bronchitis, colds, rheumatism and cystitis.

There are many colors to choose from. You will find single-colored pansies in yellow, orange, burgundy, purple, white, blue, or a combination of the above colors. Pansies with a "black eye", that is, with a black spot in the center of the flower, are also very beautiful.

If you want to plant them with other flowers, know that they are very suitable with cyclamens, ornamental cabbages, and tulips. What is certain is that they can give you a beautiful colorful carpet on their own! .

How do we plant pansies?

Pansies are easily propagated by seed and can be planted in pots and planters at a depth of about one centimeter. We take care to plant them sparsely so that they can grow better when they sprout. Alternatively, we can purchase pansies in small pots from nurseries, creating special color combinations of our liking. We transplant them at distances of 10 centimeters between them, while when there are other plants in the pot, we place them in the front row so that they receive abundant sunlight and give abundant flowering.
